Day 3 - Off to a good start

Rather than just recap the daily blog at night, I figure it might be easier to provide occasional update during the day in order to save time.

So here it is Friday morning. Crack Jack and I had a great start to the day. Last night while we bonding and watching a movie, I accidental fell asleep and forgot to put Jack in his crate. I realized this immediately when he started licking my face this morning (this is something I am not used to). My first thought was what did he do, what did he do?

So I got up and looked around and nothing. Everything was fine. Apparently this dog never left my bed once throughout the night!  This was great surprise and gives me some hope and trust in pup.

Well, not to push my luck, I immediately got up, got dressed and took the Jack out for walk. Unfortunately it was pouring pretty good outside this morning and looks like it'll be raining for the entire day and tomorrow. So while I got dressed, put on a cap, winter jacket and brought an umbrella, Jack was ready to go. As I dreaded going outside, Jack was content as ever. He just strolled everywhere in all the different grassy areas. I thought he'd want to do his business and get back inside. But nope, not Jack. He just wanted to walk and stroll casually as if it were just a beautiful morning outside. It is now apparent to me that Jack does not mind bad weather. So it looks like me - and his eventual new family - can't give the excuse that it's raining outside so we can't go out for a walk... DAMN

The only bad part was coming back in from the rain, my intent was to get a towel to dry him off, but instead he helped himself by rolling on my bed and pillows to dry himself off. Lucky me.

THE RAIN - Come to find out, Jack seems to enjoy the rain. Had to take him out 4 times today. But the good news is that 3 of the 4 walks we had... he did his business... He decided to save pee inside. But hey, I can't complain 3 out 4 is great progress.

What really amazed me is that he was not fazed by sudden lightening and thunderstorm booms that hit us hard while we outside. The weather definitely doesn't bother this dog.

Unfortunately we didn't get to stay out long because of the rain, so we didn't have a lot of outdoor fun. Our activities were fun for a while, but Jack was hopped on something.. I'm sure of it.  He was a ball of energy all day and constantly wanted my attention and to play. For my part I played with him here and there, so he had to keep himself entertained. So without realizing it, he went on a chewing binge tearing apart anything he could get his paws on. Once he got bored, he move onto any other items he could find. He made quite a mess, but no real damage, so life will go on after I work on cleaning up all the things he chewed up.

Fortunately for the past 2 hours he's worn himself out of energy and crawled into his crate on his own - with the crate door constantly open. I definitely think he has taken to the crate and considers it his private lounge, which is fine with me

It's 10pm now and I plan on waking him up to play with him for bit, then take him out for his final walk before bedtime. If he stays as quiet and good as the past two nights... things will great.

Tomorrow I am going to friend's house and introduce Jack to my buddy James, his, wife and 2 kids (9 and 12), plus their two small and snappy dog. I hoping this will be a good opportunity to get used to social situations among adults, kids, 2 small dogs and two cats.

Keep your fingers crossed for me, cuz it could be a crazy afternoon. I'll update you tomorrow on how it all went.

Comments on Jack's Photo today

As I just uploaded this picture, I realize that Cracker Jack looks like a full grown dog, and not like a puppy. but don't let this picture fool you. When jack is standing his back comes up to my knees. And when you walk with him you see just how small he is, compared to other labs. His body is definitely growing faster than his brain, but that is common in larger in dogs.

I tried weighing Jack this morning, which was no easy task. First I had to get on the scale to get my base weight. Then I lifted and held jack with me on the scale... and the best I can read, Jack is about 42 lbs. So I guess for any dog, that may be considered large. But by the time his body fully matures, he'll probably weigh about 65 pounds... a playful 65 lbs.
